The Journey Begins – South West London Cadets Take on the Cateran Yomp
For the first time ever, cadets and adult instructors from the South West London Army Cadet Force are stepping up to face one of the UK’s toughest endurance events: the Cateran Yomp. That’s 54 miles in just 24 hours, across the wild and unforgiving hills of rural Perthshire.
This isn’t just a physical challenge. It’s a test of resilience, grit, and teamwork. Every single one of us — cadets and adults together — will need to dig deep. And for our cadets, all of whom come from South London (some from disadvantaged backgrounds), it’s a life-changing opportunity to prove what can be achieved through determination, preparation, and support.
Why We’re Doing This
We’re taking on the Yomp to raise vital funds for the Army Benevolent Fund – the Army’s national charity. The ABF provides lifelong support to soldiers, veterans, and their families. Every mile we march will help make a real difference to those who’ve given so much in service.
What Lies Ahead
Success in the Yomp won’t come overnight. Between now and June 2026, we’ll be committing to a demanding training programme:
-
Weekly fitness and endurance sessions.
-
Long-distance hikes, building up from 10 to 30 miles.
-
Night training and resilience drills.
-
A final 40-mile trial before the event itself.
It will take months of preparation, teamwork, and sheer effort to get ready for this challenge. But this is only the beginning.
Follow Our Journey
This blog marks the start of our Yomp story. Over the coming months, we’ll share updates on our training, introduce you to some of the cadets and adult instructors taking part, and give you an inside look at the highs, the lows, and the lessons learned along the way.
We know it won’t be easy. There will be blisters, aching muscles, and moments of doubt. But there will also be laughter, camaraderie, and the pride of knowing we’re part of something bigger.
👉 Please support us, donate if you can, and follow our journey as we train for 54 miles, 24 hours, and one team mission.
This is just the beginning. Blog #2 will take you behind the scenes of our early training sessions…
