A lesson in considering the small print...
"Shall we do a big walk in Scotland next summer, I need someting to kickstart exercising again...". Is about all I remember hearing my oldest & dearest friend saying. "Absolutely, of course", my brain leapt into replying - "lets do it, any excuse for a holiday, fresh air and Strava kudos, sign me up!"
Where did my brain go? I'm not sure, probably imagining a 10, 15 maybe even 20-mile walk with glorious waterside picnic spots and a pub at the end no doubt. Sun shining, of course.
Well, if this isn't the biggest lesson in learning to think before I speak, or reading the small print of life!
In 12 weeks, I, along with other members of Team "This seemed like a good idea in 2025" will be having a stab at The Cateran Yomp. Starting at 6am on Saturday 6th June, we have 24hrs to complete the 54mile trail.
And it turns out, that's quite a long way.
So far Milo and I have worked our way up to 22.5miles. Using annual leave to maximise miles without compromising family time means walking regardless of the weather - and there have been some very soggy walks. Gradually I'm improving on anticipating hydration, nutrition and breaks to optimise endurance. I've learnt not to take my shoes off after being in them for 4+hours solid because it's unlikely they'll go back on. God bless the existence of Audible for helping with the mental slog of it all. Chaffing is real, hip flexors have been rediscovered with a vengeance and recovery can be somewhat limited with a toddler who doesn't sit still!
If you've made it this far, I'm obliged to ask for donation. Entering the walk means I've committed to raising £400 for the Army Benevolent Fund who arrange the event. The charity raises funds to support soldiers, veterans and their immediate families and would be grateful for any support you can give.
It might also be a good time to take out shares in blister plasters and radox bath salts. Wish us luck!

Good luck Kat! I’m sure you’ll smash it. My donation is not just a nod to the sheer effort you need for the miles ahead, but the great friend you were when we worked together! Thank you and well done for the money you’ve raised so far 🥰🥰 xxx
