The Cateran Yomp 2026

On the 6 - 7 June 2026, I am taking on the Cateran Yomp. A 54-mile hike in 24 hours across rural Perthshire.

It’s going to be tough but it will raise vital funds for the Army Benevolent Fund, providing a lifetime of support to soldiers, veterans and their immediate families.

Please give generously, and thank you for all your support.

My Updates

Training in the Lake District

On Sunday just gone, I left home at 5.30am, drove 2.5hrs to Braithwaite in the Lake District, hiked for 9.5hrs, and drove home again. I covered 15.6 miles, climbed the elevation equal to Ben Nevis, and "bagged" three Wainwrights.

The Lake District is somewhere I was itching to explore and give some of my nearly new gear a trial. I met a good friend of mine - who knows the Lakes so well she can name all of the peaks, tarns and lakes on sight - and was tested. I told her I wanted elevation since uphill is where I struggle, and she did not disappoint.

We started in Braithwaite, heading south before climbing Robinson. This was a STEEP climb, and I tried out scrambling which was great fun. Next we headed South East and on to Hindscarth and Dale Head. We stopped for a late lunch by the tarn, then dropped down into the valley to head North back to Braithwaite.

This hike really highlighted the importance of fuelling. I cannot describe the difference a pack of jelly tots made with 3 mile left to go.

The next morning I was surprised at how well I felt. This really brought home how much the training has improved my fitness and capability. But I firmly believe walking on the beach as the tide came in helped refresh my tired feet.

Not long to go now.

Training

Ordinarily, I'd describe my approach to exercise as active without regularity, but this event has made me focus. Over the past 10 weeks, this is what my weeks have looked like, or aimed for where life got in the way.

At first I found the prospect daunting, but once I started, with the end goal in mind, I've loved it. I've loved learning just how capable my body is, how much I can achieve physically that I'd always believed I couldn't. I've enjoyed the variety of training, and discovering footpaths I'd not explored before.

Whilst maintaining this level of intensity in exercise isn't something I'll be continuing, training for the Cateran Yomp has helped me realise how important it is to make time for activity, both for physical and mental health. And I'm looking forward to building that routine once I'm on the other side of the Yomp.

For now, I'm feeling excited to Yomp, and I can't wait to get going.
