EVENT RULES
The Cateran Yomp is organised on behalf of The Army Benevolent Fund (registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales under Charity Number 1146420 and the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator under charity Number SC039189) having its principal office at Mountbarrow House, 12 Elizabeth Street, London, SW1W 9RB (hereinafter referred to as “ABF”) and True Grit Limited is being employed to manage the event on their behalf. The team will be available to present to companies and organisations interested in participating, and to answer any questions about the event.
The Event Rules are devised both for your own safety and for the well-being of the event as a whole. By registering to take part in The Cateran Yomp you are agreeing to the following conditions of entry and to following any instructions given to you by the organisers, officials and marshals before, during or after the event.
Signing up – Civilian/Serving Military (all branches) and Veterans
- You and your team members must be at least 16 years of age by the start of the event to compete.
- Any under 18’s taking part must have written permission from a parent or guardian to take part in the event.
- You and your team members will pay a non-refundable registration fee of up to £135 per entrant payable to The Army Benevolent Fund when registering. Your place is not secured until this fee is received, but if the Cateran Yomp is full on receipt of your fee, you will be entitled to a refund.
- Registration fees are payable as part of the online registration process. Registration fees paid by cheque should be made payable to The Army Benevolent Fund.
- Once accepted, your place cannot be cancelled unless we receive your written request to do so, nor can you give your place to any other person as this a serious breach of health and safety, unless, in both cases, we receive written notice of the change 24 hours prior to registration.
- You may only defer your place in the Cateran Yomp once, at the discretion of the Army Benevolent Fund. Any requests to do so must be made by 01 May the year of the Yomp you are registered for.
- If you are signing up as serving military you will provide valid military ID/evidence if requested at the event.
Signing up – Cadets
- As a Cadet your entry is paid for by the Charity (to a limit of 120 Cadets) and you are entitled to a £50 contribution towards your travel costs. To claim this contact yomp@armybenevolentfund.org with receipts from all travel being claimed for.
- Ultimate responsibility for the safe operation of the event lies with the event director – True Grit Events.
- Responsibility for communicating key safety and training information lies with the ABF, the Army Benevolent Fund.
- The team leader, as designated by the relevant Cadet force, is responsible for the safety of the Cadets participating.
- The Team Leader (TL), as appointed by the Cadet force, is responsible for the management and coordination for one or more Cadet teams including but not limited to
- Liaising with the ABF including registering online for the event as the team captain.
- Assurance to the Event Director that all Cadets are sufficiently trained, have the necessary equipment and support team and understand the event rules.
- Take part with the cadets they are responsible for with a maximum ratio of 1:8.
- Each team must have suitable support, which must be a support team they bring themselves.
- Team leaders must as a minimum hold a Mountain Leader qualification, checked by the ACF assurance process prior to joining the event. If they choose to, they will also be able to claim a funded place and £50 towards their travel (with receipts).
- Each Cadet entry will be checked to ensure you are eligible for the space. Anyone found to not be eligible will be asked to pay the full registration fee at the time or removed from the event.
Fundraising requirements: Civilian/serving military (other than British Army)/veterans/Cadets
- By taking part in The Cateran Yomp, unless you have self funded, you are agreeing that you will raise £400 minimum for the Army Benevolent Fund. Any fundraising you do undertake must be sent to the Army Benevolent Fund – you are not allowed to use your place in the Cateran Yomp to fundraise for any other charity. This includes online and offline fundraising.
Fundraising requirements: Serving British Army
- There is no requirement to fundraise for serving military. Any fundraising you do undertake is voluntary and gratefully received by the charity. Any fundraising you do undertake must be sent to the Army Benevolent Fund – you are not allowed to use your place in the Cateran Yomp to fundraise for any other charity This includes online and offline fundraising.
Limitations of fundraising
- You and your team members will send all the sponsorship money, which you have raised, to The Army Benevolent Fund as soon as possible after the event end but no later than 31 July after the event.
- Sponsorship cheques should be made payable to The Army Benevolent Fund and sent to The Cateran Yomp, The Army Benevolent Fund, Mountbarrow House, 12 Elizabeth Street, London, SW1W 9RB.
- If for any reason you or any of your team members choose not to take up your place or the event is cancelled, or you are not permitted to take part in the event, all sponsorship forms and money collected must be forwarded to The Army Benevolent Fund and will not be refunded.
- You are not permitted to use any of the sponsor money that you may choose to raise in relation to your entry in The Cateran Yomp to pay for your expenses. If you do not pass all of the money that you raise to The Cateran Yomp you may be committing a criminal offence.
Personal Fitness, Risk & Liabilities
- All participants agree to abide by the terms and conditions set out in the Cateran Yomp Safety Brief which takes place the Friday evening before the start of the event. All participants MUST attend this compulsory safety brief at the Event Hub.
- All participants enter into Cateran Yomp of their own will, understanding the arduous nature of the event. As such they must be medically fit to participate and take full responsibility for their own personal health and fitness.
- You and your team members are strongly advised to consult a doctor before undertaking any strenuous exercise or training programme, or participating in the event, should you believe there are grounds for such consultation.
- You and your team members are taking part in The Cateran Yomp at your own risk.
- For safety reasons, from the Bronze checkpoint we recommend that each Yomper is walking in a group of at least 3 from that point on. Event staff can assist in grouping you with others. This includes anyone taking part in the Relay.
- The organisers will have no responsibility for any risk, loss or costs which you incur in connection with the event and you will indemnify the organisers and any persons acting on their behalf for any risk, damages, loss or costs arising as a result of your participation in the event. The organisers will not carry insurance in relation to your participation in the event so it is your responsibility to obtain any necessary insurance in connection with The Cateran Yomp.
- Neither True Grit Limited, those benefiting from The Cateran Yomp, event sponsors nor associates accept any liability for the health of the entrant, before during or after the event. – Prior to and during the event you and your team members will be responsible for your own safety, you will take all reasonable care to ensure the safety of other participants and you will comply promptly with all instructions and guidelines given by the organisers and any persons acting on their behalf.
- The organisers reserve the right to terminate an individual’s attempt to complete on health and safety grounds. The Cateran Yomp will take place regardless of bad weather and will only be cancelled, re-routed or stopped for reasons of safety or by law. Refunds will only be made in the event that The Cateran Yomp is unavoidably cancelled by the organisers.
- Throughout the event, participants will be checked for their suitability to continue on grounds of capability including their equipment and state of health. If any of the marshals and medical staff believe that the safety of the individual will be compromised by their continued participation, they reserve the right to ask that person or persons to stop. If that person or persons continue on the route they will no longer be officially participating in the event and TrueGrit Events Ltd, The Army Benevolent Fund and associates take no further responsibility for their participation and state of health.
- The organisers will have no responsibility for damage to vehicles or property left within vehicles.
Rules of participation
- We recommend you are in a group of three or more at all times.
- You must not deviate from the official route which will be marked by The Cateran Yomp signage from start to finish. Signs will also indicate when you are approaching a refreshment stop.
- Some of the route will be on minor roads but these will not be traffic free. There will be marshals located on the route but they do not have the authority to stop motorists; they are there for your safety and that of other road users. Please listen and obey their instructions. All volunteers and staff involved in the event will be clearly identifiable.
- All teams will be given an event identifier, either prior to or at registration, which must be displayed for identification at checkpoints and is your passport to refreshments on the course.
- You must complete the course within 24 hours.
- Team entries will only be deemed as having completed the course when the last member of the team has crossed the finish line, upon which the official finishing time for the team entry will be based.
- Given the farming nature of the terrain, dogs may only accompany blind participants.
- Participants with disabilities are welcome to take part, although due to the nature of the event we ask you to contact the organisers prior to registering.
- If a disabled person requires assistance from another person, this person must also register and participate in The Cateran Yomp.
- Anyone who wants to run the event will start at 0800hrs.
Medical disclaimer
By completing this registration you agree that
- In the event of an accident or illness whilst taking part in this event, I hereby give permission for Medical staff to initiate medical treatment and to inform my Next of Kin in case of hospitalisation.
- To the best of my knowledge I submit a true and accurate description of my medical history and current condition. I understand that I am taking part in an event in a remote and rural location where there will be a longer medical response time in the event of emergency. I agree to take part in this event at my own risk and will not hold the medics responsible in the event or acute illness, injury or death.
- I will inform the event organisers of any medical or other condition irrelevant of whether I believe it might affect my ability to take part in the event.
Personal data and communications
- In the course of registering and participating in The Cateran Yomp we will collect personal data from you, your team members and your support members. We may process and use the personal data collected for administrative, research and publicity purposes.
- By entering the event you give us permission to use your name (and that of your team, team members and organisation that you represent), voice picture in any broadcast, telecast, advertising material, or other account of The Cateran Yomp.
- You understand and agree that by submitting an online registration to participate in this event, you are consenting to receive email and postal communications from The Army Benevolent Fund regarding The Cateran Yomp. You acknowledge that it is your responsibility to ensure emails regarding your participation in the event sent by The Army Benevolent Fund and/or event organisers (including but not limited to email receipts, tickets and advanced notices) are received by you, and are not redirected to Spam or Junk folders or sent to email addresses you do not have access to. You cannot unsubscribe or opt out from these communications.
- Your data will only be used for marketing purposes, including but not limited to electronic marketing, if you provide specific consent for this during the registration process. You understand that you may unsubscribe from any marketing lists you do opt in to receiving at any time, either by using the link provided in e-mails or by calling The Army Benevolent Fund at any time.
- The Army Benevolent Fund will never sell or otherwise distribute your details to any third party, except in regards to providing health and safety data to the event organisers for use in that respect only.
