The Italy Frontline Walk traces the historic battles of the Second World War, following the route taken by Allied forces during the Italian campaign. The trek goes from the Salerno beaches up to Monte Cassino.
Covering over 40 miles on foot, we visit sites like the British Military Cemetery, Minturno War Cemetery, the Gustav Line Museum and climb Monte Camino. In Monte Cassino we visit Commonwealth cemeteries, explore the bombed abbey and the nearby Rocca Janula Castle. The journey concludes in Naples, giving participants time to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of those who fought.

Your itinerary
Day 1: Arrival
We arrive in southern Italy and begin our journey with a visit to the Salerno landing site, where Allied forces came ashore in September 1943 during Operation Avalanche. We pay our respects at the British Military Cemetery in Salerno, a solemn reminder of the campaign’s human cost. After meeting the team and settling into our accommodation, we gather for a welcome dinner and briefing on the days ahead.
Day 2: Along the Gustav Line
We start with a short transfer to Minturno War Cemetery, the resting place of over 2,000 Commonwealth soldiers who died fighting to break through the Gustav Line in 1944. From there, we walk to the War Museum of the Garigliano Front, which tells the story of this pivotal battle. Our route continues through the hills and countryside, ending at the Monumento ai Caduti in Sant’Andrea del Garigliano.

Day 3: Monte Camino
On the second day of walking, we will take on the climb to Monte Camino. Standing at 963 metres, Monte Camino formed a key part of the German Winter Line and overlooked the routes that Allied forces needed to advance north towards Rome; its strategic importance made it the scene of intense fighting during the winter of 1943.
Near the summit, we will reach the small Santa Maria di Monte Camino church, a landmark that offers a place for quiet reflection. From here, the panoramic views stretch for miles across the landscape that Allied forces fought so hard to capture.

Day 4: Monte Cassino and the Abbey
Our route takes us through key sites of the Battle of Monte Cassino, beginning with the German War Cemetery in Caira. We continue along Cavendish Road, built by Allied engineers to support the final assault. At the summit, we visit the Polish War Cemetery and the iconic Montecassino Abbey, bombed in 1944 and later rebuilt. Our descent passes Rocca Janula Castle, once a German stronghold, before returning to our hotel.

Day 5: Reflection in Naples
We transfer to Naples for a final day of reflection. With time to explore the city’s historic centre or simply relax, it’s a chance to absorb the emotional and physical journey we’ve undertaken. In the evening, we gather for our return flight home, bringing to a close a powerful and memorable experience.
