ABOUT MANCHESTER CATHEDRAL

Manchester Cathedral—officially the Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George—stands at the heart of the city as one of its most historic and inspiring landmarks. With origins dating back over 800 years, the cathedral has long been a place of reflection, resilience, and community, making it a fitting setting for an event honouring the Army family.

Built in the distinctive Perpendicular Gothic style, the cathedral is renowned for its soaring architecture, intricate medieval woodwork, and the celebrated Minstrel Angels carved in the 15th century. Despite suffering damage during the Second World War and again in the 1996 Manchester bombing, the cathedral has been carefully restored—its story echoing the strength and endurance that resonate deeply with serving soldiers and veterans alike.

Today, Manchester Cathedral remains a vibrant centre for worship, remembrance, and public life. It regularly hosts military services, charity events, and civic ceremonies, continuing its long tradition of supporting those who serve and the communities around them.
With its rich heritage and powerful atmosphere, the cathedral provides a meaningful and memorable backdrop for this Army Benevolent Fund - Afternoon of Music.
