The Cateran Yomp 2024

On the 8 - 9 June 2024, I am taking on the Cateran Yomp. A 54-mile hike in 24 hours across rural Perthshire.

It’s going to be tough but it will raise vital funds for the Army Benevolent Fund, providing a lifetime of support to soldiers, veterans and their immediate families.

Please give generously, and thank you for all your support.

Embracing the Challenge: My Journey to Conquer the Cateran Yomp

As an IT operations manager based in Edinburgh, my days are often filled with tackling cybersecurity threats and ensuring the smooth running of complex systems. Beyond my civilian career, I also serve as a reservist in the Army Royal Signals. Recently, I have taken on a different kind of challenge — one that pushes my physical and mental limits far beyond the confines of the office and the regiment. I am training hard for the Cateran Yomp, a gruelling endurance event that covers a staggering fifty-four miles through the rugged terrain of the Scottish Highlands, and I will be undertaking this challenge with my Regiment.

The Decision to Yomp

Why the Cateran Yomp, you might ask? It is not just about the miles or the breathtaking landscapes (though they are a bonus). The Yomp is a true test of endurance, teamwork, and determination. It is about pushing myself to new limits and proving that I can achieve something extraordinary. Plus, it supports a fantastic cause raising funds for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, which provides support to soldiers, veterans, and their families. Doing this with my Regiment adds a layer of camaraderie and shared purpose, making the experience even more meaningful.

Training Regimen: Building Endurance and Strength

Training for the Yomp is no small feat. I started with shorter hikes, gradually increasing my distance and intensity. Recently, I completed a 23-mile hike in one stint a significant milestone that boosted my confidence and gave me a taste of what is to come. Here is a glimpse into my training regimen:

1. Long Distance Hikes: These are the backbone of my training. The 23-mile hike was a major achievement, but it is just the beginning. Each week, I aim to cover more ground, focusing on maintaining a steady pace and managing my energy levels.

2. Shorter, High Intensity Hikes: Interspersed with my long-distance hikes are shorter, more intense sessions. These helps improve my cardiovascular fitness and build the stamina needed to tackle the varied terrain of the Cateran Trail.

3. Gym Workouts: Strength training is crucial. I incorporate a mix of weightlifting, core exercises, and functional training to build muscle strength and improve overall stability. This is essential for carrying a pack and navigating the hills and valleys of the Highlands.

4. Military Training: As a reservist in the Army Royal Signals, my military training plays a significant role. The discipline, physical fitness, and mental resilience developed through my service are invaluable assets in preparing for the Yomp.

5. Recovery and Nutrition: Proper recovery is just as important as the training itself. I ensure I get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, and follow a balanced diet rich in protein, carbs, and healthy fats. This helps my body recover and prepares me for the next training session.

Mental Preparation: The Inner Game

Endurance events like the Cateran Yomp are as much a mental challenge as a physical one. I have been working on developing mental toughness through various techniques:

Visualization: Imagining the route, the landscapes, and the feeling of crossing the finish line helps keep me motivated.

Mindfulness and Meditation: These practices help reduce stress and improve focus, ensuring I stay calm and collected during tough training sessions and the Yomp itself.

Setting Milestones: Breaking down the fifty-four miles into smaller, manageable goals helps make the challenge feel less daunting.

Looking Ahead: The Road to the Yomp

With each training session, I am getting closer to being Yomp ready. The journey so far has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. I have learned a lot about myself, discovered new strengths, and developed a deeper appreciation for the beauty of Scotland’s landscapes.

The Cateran Yomp is more than just an event; it is a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and community. As I continue my training, I am reminded of the support and encouragement from friends, family, and fellow Yompers. Together with my Regiment, we will conquer those fifty-four miles and make a difference for a worthy cause.

Stay tuned for more updates as I continue my training journey. Here is to embracing the challenge and pushing beyond limits!
