2025 TCS London Marathon

Touring London on Foot

Why run the London Marathon when there are so many marathons closer to home in the States?  I’ve run marathons from Alaska to Boston but hadn’t run one since 2006.  It was at the 2019 London Marathon that I found myself standing on the Tower Bridge with my son-in-law, Capt. (ret.) Simon Clarke, cheering Sgt. Major Gavin Paton who was running in support of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.  Simon and Gavin served together in Iraq and are now both part of my extended family.

The amazing atmosphere of the London Marathon inspired me to suggest we run London together the following year.  The Covid pandemic interrupted those plans, but we finally managed to run the Dallas Marathon together in 2022.  When I learned of the opportunity to run London in support of The Soldiers’ Charity, I leapt at the chance (as much as a 65-year-old can leap at anything).

Through Simon and Gavin, I’ve come to realize the impact military service can have on those who serve and their families.  I’m impressed by the range of services The Soldiers’ Charity supports to honor those who have served their country.  It is an honor to help raise funds to continue this work.

My Updates

Maybe next year...

I'm sorry to say that I've been battling a cold and allergies the past three weeks.  This has really impacted my training, as I can't get past about 12 miles without coughing and wheezing (more than usual).  I've made the difficult decision to not run, as I really don't feel adequately prepared for the challenge of 26.2.  Maybe next year....
