I've created this page because I want to make a difference. I'm inspired by the work of The Army Benevolent Fund and wanted to support them by raising money as part of my participation in TCS London Marathon 2024. I am running the London Marathon for the Army Benevolent Fund and here is a little information for the reason why. My late grandfather George Fredrick Doughty was a member of the paratroopers. he was my absolute hero. My grandfather did not speak much about his time with the paratroop squad as, before him and his team were due to jump into France, they were doing a practice jump and his parachute malfunctioned. needless to say my grandfather ended up in hospital and was there for a while. In the meantime the rest of his team went ahead with the jump into the war and sadly none survived. My grandfather was a very proud man and didn't think he was worthy of his medal and red beret. Years went past and one Christmas back in the late 80's my grandmother Lily surprised my grandad. she had sent away for his medals and beret and wrapped them up. As he opened his gift in anticipation and with that cheeky smile he wore, his face quickly changed. raising his hands above his eye to try and hide his tears, he broke down and opened up about what had happened. so whilst he did not think he was worthy. to his wife ( my Nan) Lily and the rest of us, he was our hero. I am also very happy to say that he did finally work up the courage to march in London with other veterans on Remembrance Sunday.
