My Updates

Final resting .

A short walk today to reach the 80 miles. It's been a great experience as ever and looking at the sponsor league it's also been a fantastic effort from all the participants. Let's always keep the thoughts with us and never forget those who sacrificed and those who sacrifice today and in the future. Lest we forget!

16 mile moors walk

Great walk yesterday with this great man to clock the miles up. The day had all weathers but we kept going through snow, ice and plenty of mud. Ended in pickering and a well deserved pint (or two was had). Nearly at target now and everyday remembering the memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and those who carry burdens to this day.

Even more of a chance meeting with Paul.

Chance meeting

Tuesday 17th November

Today's walk was a long one, just under 17 miles, ouch legs and feet.
Bumped into no other than my mother in law and then, most ironically another loony partaking in the my Frontline Walk. I was changing tops when he spotted my T Shirt and promptly unzipped his coat to reveal the same t-shirt. Small world indeed.

Norman plumb worked at terrys for 50 years

Terry's

Bishopthorpe cenotaph

November 15th

Due to flooding in York I had to amend the original route of the today's walk.
However, I made the most of the change and found the alternative route to be poignant anyway. I started at the cenotaph in Bishopthorpe, a small village on the outskirts of York. Walking away from the village I passed the old chocolate factory, Terry's which some may remember made the chocolate orange. Looking at the old buildings I began to wonder how many workers were called away to war. I know of one immediately, that being my wife's grandfather Norman plumb. He went to fight in France and survived to return and marry his sweetheart hilda Mason. They went on to have children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The cenotaph in the village is a reminder of those who never returned.

Our last meet.

Cheers mate

My mate jarrod

As we watch the sunset on remembrance day and carry on our lives with some maybe thinking its only one day in the year, it's worthwhile remembering that for many the struggles are present and real. Jarrod and myself met in the army cadets in York. We were both in the band where he played the big base drum and I the bugle. It won't surprise some that he went to join the cavalry /tanks and me the signals 😉. We used to meet often on leave and create Mayhem as many others on here will remember doing so I'm sure. In fact despite his many medals he was always proud of us drinking 19 pints of Guinness in a day and still getting the bus home. After he married we lost touch for a while but messaged every now and then to touch base. Jarrod was a tank commander and first in on gulf War one. He also deployed under UN in Cyprus. He was a man who led from the front and showed no fear. After leaving the army he joined the London metropolitan Police and yet again was in first on the terrible atrocities of 7/11. Ultimately all these experiences contributed to him suffering ptsd as well as heavy drinking which would take his life eventually. He died a lone figure in Cyprus. A shadow of the man I knew. I myself suffered an accident resulting in a mild traumatic brain injury whilst working in Berlin the same month. I attended his funeral service at St saviours church in York which has associations with the cavalry regiments, jarrods being the 4/7th dragoons. I miss him and have great memories of our times together through our lives. He was my hero, my friend, my protector at times and my nemesis on others. My walk today is about him and others who suffer the demons and how we must keep supporting during and after service. Please raise a glass for jarrod and others in need present day.

Remembrance Sunday

1st memorial on my first walk. 🙏🏻

Today I walked into York to start my efforts on the Frontline Walk. Always a poignant day on remembrance Sunday. Paying respect to all those who have suffered because of war and to the fallen who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Many are suffering present day and it's equally important to keep them in our thoughts.
