I'm doing this because I want to make a difference

Neither of my grandfathers were career soldiers but they were called up and did their bit.  I admire the work of the Army Benevolent Fund, helping men and women like my grandfathers, and wanted to support them by raising money through participation in My Frontline Walk. Please help me help them by giving whatever you can use the 'Donate' button.

The more people that know about the Army Benevolent Fund, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing my page with your friends and family.

Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot. The photo is of my Grandfather John Juleff and me on Remembrance Day 1969 or so.

My Updates

Jim Alberts, Sgt 1st Class, 224th regiment - Tank Commander, Korea

My father-in-law, Jim Alberts, is 92 but still going strong, looking after his wife of over 60 years, cracking jokes with the staff at ‘Charlies’ in Bay Head, NJ, and enjoying his daily Dewars or two.

In 1950 the Korean War broke out and Jim faced the draft. His best friend’s girlfriend asked Jim to look after him so Jim and Billy Underdunk volunteered together, hoping to be sent to the same unit.   His friend spent the war in the US and Jim was sent to Korea. At the age of 21 years, he ended up as a Sergeant 1st Class and Tank Commander, in charge of a platoon of tanks on the front line.

Jim has never spoken much about his experiences in Korea but he did tell us that he was medivacked out by helicopter and for many years bits of shrapnel would come out of his legs. He went back, held the hand of a good friend whose other arm had been blown off and had another good friend die of asphyxiation from the tank engine fumes as he was trying to keep warm in the bitter cold. He alluded to many other experiences too painful to discuss but which remained with him throughout his life. Another young man scarred by war.

Long walk on Remembrance Day

I enjoyed that pint at the end of it - 17 miles from New Hope to Trenton, via the graves of unknown soldiers who dies of disease, cold and hunger in December 1776, the banks of the River Delaware where Washington led his small army to surprise the British/Hessian troops in Trenton and changed the course of the War of Independence to the Trenton War Memorial for the dead of WW1 and the wars thereafter.  So many dead and wounded.  I'd like to think that it won't happen again but, of course, it will.

Lawrence Meharg, RIP

Uncle Lawrence was born on 25th January 1925 in Belfast. Died on 24th March 1941 age 16 Mess room boy on the Agnete Maersk (steam cargo ship) sunk by gunfire from an Italian submarine the Veniero in the North Atlantic Ocean roughly 330 miles west of the southwestern coast of Ireland.

My Mum's family in service

The Mehargs - a Belfast family

Grandfather Andrew Meharg;  WW1 Royal Army Service Corps, took supplies to the front line and back.  My Aunt Gladys wrote; ‘he was only a boy whose role was to collect the dead and injured and bring them back to camp’.   WW2; he was in the BEF and we think at Dunkirk.  He finally got home to Belfast in 1941 only to find his home destroyed by a German bomb. The neighbours were able to tell him that his wife had taken the kids (including my Mum) to another house which had shelter when the sirens started. The rest of the war he spent working in the Belfast shipbuilding industry.

Me; Gery Juleff; Ulster Defence Regiment

The photo shows my Granda and Granny, with Uncle Bertie, who after the war emigrated to Australia where his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren flourish.

3 Cornishmen who served

Grandfather Juleff served in WW1 in France and Italy, Uncle Dennis (right) served in the Royal Navy and ended up serving in Burma inn WW2 maintaining the river boats the 14th Army used. My father, still a boy in this photograph, served in Aden, Cyprus and N Ireland during his 30+ years with the Life Guards.

Off to a good start

It so happens that Ireland played NZ in Chicago on 1st November, so here I am in the Windy City, which I have learned to really like!  Anyway, between walking to the Stadium and back, and exploring the city, I managed to get over 17 miles in over 2 days.  Today should be similar so that is a good start to achieving my 100 miles goal.

Refining my strategy!!

I already 'walk' more than 100 miles per month so 'just walking' 100 miles will not really be a challenge.  What I will do is use my AllTrails App to keep track of specific fundraising walks - not just pottering around.  I will aim to do 4 miles minimum every day and then the 16.5 miles on 11/11. That way, I can afford to miss a few days if circumstances dictate it.  First walk will be in Chicago on Saturday, where I will be for the Ireland - NZ game.  It's 2.6 miles from hotel to stadium. Add in a diversion or two for refreshments and I should be off to a good start!

Time to start walking

November approaches and there is a crispness in the air - perfect for walking.  My plan is to walk a minimum of 100 miles in November, mainly in 4-6 mile 'bursts' before or after work, with longer walks at the weekend as needed.  I am used to walking so am confident that I will reach my goal by 31 November. Thank you for your support.

In memory of my ancestors who risked their lives

Both my Grandfathers, John Juleff and Andrew Meharg, served in WW1, and one served in WW2 as well. My father, Kit Juleff, served in the Household Cavalry from 1954-1976.  I am grateful to them all, and to their comrades, who risked their lives for us. I support the work of the Army Benevolent Fund and look forward to wearing out some leather to raise some money for their important work.
