The Rugby Relics Journey started in 2017 with three ex military mates, wanting to do a little to help our former comrades who suffered as a result of combat operations.
In the beginning, we pledged to raise £100,000 as our target, and whilst covid and many other factors set us back, it never dulled our desire to hit that target.
Over the years, Relics have come and Relics have gone and the two mainstays, Jason Sherer and Chris Price continued to recruit team members when we could. Both of our families have supported us in this, and many of them have also walked with us and become Relics themselves.
Amongst these was Jasons Dad, Keith, a fervent supporter of both the relics and this great charity and ex member of the forces himself. In 2023 however, we sadly said goodbye to Keith when he passed away.
This year, 2024, we walk in Keiths memory along with new Relics, amongst them Vicky, Keiths daughter (the FlapJack Girl of Flanders) who has also always strongly supported us, will walk with the team also.
We will be trekking 100km following in the footsteps of those who fought on the Somme and Passchendaele battlefields during the First World War
The team, - Jason Sherer, Chris Price, Vicky Turton, Pete Oliver, Darren Parker and John Cotter, will be doing this to commemorate the sacrifices made by those who fought in WWI whilst helping to support the soldiers and veterans of today. Keith, I'm sure will be with us in spirit, pushing us along the way - Lord knows we will need it!
So far, our team total stands at over £50,000 raised in previous years.
It is a physically and emotionally tough challenge, but we are doing it all for a great cause: ABF The Soldiers' Charity, the National Charity of the British Army. They support soldiers, veterans and their families when they need it most.
