Operation Bletchley 2025: London

Distance achieved

51.39 miles

Target

25 miles

6 Years supporting the ABF

I’ve done many events to support the ABF over the last few years. This year, as part of the VE80 celebrations, I am going to visit most of the 10 checkpoints on the route as part of my 25 Mile route in the ground in the first week 50 by the end of July)in support of OPB VE80. I’ll be doing my challenge during the first few days of July and plan to camp / sleep rough for a few days of my walk while ticking off each checkpoint on the route. I’m doing this as I know there are many Veterans that fall on hard times end up sleeping on the streets, in their cars or in woods for weeks on end, so I will experience what it feels like for a few days.

I’m inspired by the work of Army Benevolent Fund and wanted to support them by raising money as part of my participation in Operation Bletchley: London. Please help me help them by giving whatever you can using the 'Donate' button.

The more people that know about Army Benevolent Fund, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing my page with your friends and family.

Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot.

My Updates

Mission Update - Thank you Sponsors👏

[Mission Update] Agent 2-Flags had a day off yesterday - enjoyed watching the [LIONS🦁🏉 beat the Convicts 🇦🇺🦘] 😂 & then [🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏉 beat Los Puma’s🇦🇷🙀]! [DISTANCE] 🥾 I completed a 4 miler in to town & back this morning to take me to my [50] hopefully for the week when it updates overnight; my target is set to [25] as wasn’t sure how I’d get on in the 4 days. I/we really enjoyed last week, despite the challenges of the heat & lack of sleep at times, it was good to get out of the house for a few days - [INT] I missed out Watford, Cricklewood, Stanmore, but substituted with Victoria & a jaunt around London central shopping/touristy sights 😁☀️ [CODEBREAKING] Junior 10/10 Complete; Codebreaker 1/10 so far; I have [🕵️Mrs Agent Smith & our🕵️‍♂️Son] as part of my [ANALYST TEAM] 😂 [SPONSORSHIP] I don’t do Social Media - apart from some closed Military/Charity groups, but as [🕵️Mrs Agent Smith] posted our Central London adventure on her FB page subsequently my sponsorship has leaped up to over £300👏 which has helped me make it over the £6000 mark👍 I still have a long way off to get to [LT COLONEL] …. but I’m only 60!! [INT] I’ve spent the last hour making some collages of all my pictures to upload to my ABF fundraising site - for my sponsors. [COMMS] THANK YOU for all of the kind comments & encouragement - you’re a smashing bunch of virtual ABF Fundraising Army legends❤️👌 I will be cheering you all on & watching how you all get on with your individual challenges [COMMS] permitting. [Agent 2-Flags OUT] 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧🥾🔚 — with ABF Fundraising Army.

Message Delivered

[SITREP 8] Made it to Baker Street SOE Offices & then Churchills War Rooms. A hot day in the Capital - who knew the 4th of July would bring out hoards of our American Cousins👏👌🇺🇸 My contact at 65 Baker Street warned me there were a lot of war refugees in the Capital today, so we thanked her and set off to the War Rooms. I had to use all of my Agent ‘social engineering skills’ to blag my way into the War Rooms [nicely avoiding the £33 entry fee] I told the security lady that I had a vital message to deliver - having walked for a few days from Bletchley Park - she glanced in my bag - saw my codebook and let me through immediately - ahead of the big queue!! [Result] 👏 I took some [INT]| photos, handed over my [TS info] and left to return home. A nice day to top off a smashing week overall with [Mrs Agent Smith] finished off with a couple of cool pints of Cider🍺❤️ 15 Miles to add to my tally. [Agent 2 -Flags 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 OUT]

That There Central London

[SITREP 7] Made it into central London with [Agent Mrs Smith] We’ve just stopped at a favourite site of mine - the SOE Memorial - my [OPPO] took a few updated [INT] shots. Also found Churchills statue again - although heaving with visitors today 👍🇬🇧🕵️‍♂️👏Unfortunately/ironically, there was a homeless Ex Soldier protesting at the statue - as he’d had all his kit taken by the authorities last night - I had a chat with him as he seemed a decent chap and I sign posted him to our Regimental charity, SSAFA etc - I hope he gets some support ❤️. Off to our next check points - 7 Miles done 🥾[Agent 2-Flags 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿] & Mrs Agent Smith [OUT]

BLURSDAY - ABBOTS LANGLEY

[SITREP 6] Made it to the allotments, gates were locked, but I found the dead-drop; I cached my back pack with the vehicle before I set off today, as only did a short 2 miles to complete this phase. Completed some codebreaking sat in the vehicle [Junior 7/10, Codebreaker working on 3 codes]. Sponsorship & Mileage going well. My agent tracking device has now run out of juice, but [COMMS] device is still functioning - I saw a nice window display commemorating [VE80] in the town, so took a pic for [INT] I’m off to [RV] with Agent [Mrs Smith], she is joining me for the Central London checkpoints tomorrow. SORRY WATFORD - I am missing you out - no offence to any agents or supporters of the football club 😂 but I am an egg chaser!🏉! [Agent 2-Flags 🕵️‍♂️🥾🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 OUT]

Blursday - Apsley

[SITREP 5] Today is Blursday!! Slept up above Apsley in a quiet area opposite a farmers tractor turning area 🚜😇 Walked down to Apsley Cafe to meet a motorbike courier, I’d had a brew/breakfast already, so I took the code and walked back to the transport to head to my next location. Slept in the car - it doesn’t look anything like the photo - as my field admin is not what it used to be, so I’m not sharing a current picture of the inside of my car - I’m living like ‘Stig of the dump’ for those old enough to remember😂. I did a recce of Watford area in the evening and decided I won’t be going there!! NOPE!🤣 [Agent 2-Flags 🥾🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧 OUT]

Berkhampstead - Comrades Corner

[SITREP 4] I did some code breaking [Avoiding spoilers so redacted my pic] listened to my daily 10:00-13:00 broadcast via [Agent] Ken 😁 - those that know, know! Cooked & ate my lunch rations on a park bench near the Canal, then walked through Berkhampstead town and back towards the aptly named RV location at ‘Comrades Corner’ ❤️ There I met my next contact and have new orders. Roughly 5 miles in weather that was a bit cooler today, so even though it’s still hot, it wasn’t as bad, still worked up a sweat mind 🥾👍 I also spotted a bus with my old unit logo on it, which was nice. Then headed off on the transport to my night time location for some dinner; I’ll be back up for my broadcast tomorrow from new location [2-Flags OUT] 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧🥾

Forest Sleep - Irvinghoe

[SITREP 3] Well, I survived a night in the National Trust Forest, no big beasties, but strange noises in the bushes 💩🦡 - it was a change sleeping (ish) under the tree canopy. I was up before dawn and did a 4 Miler to Irvinghoe, where I stopped in at the Rose & Crown pub (so early the cleaners let me in 🤣) Met my source and then jumped in the transport to move along to the next checkpoint. The weather is slightly cooler/cloudier today here it seems - so I’m gonna do some code breaking before hitting my next checkpoint at lunchtime. COSTA coffee are my new best friends, a couple of times they have given me ice/water and let me get a wash in their larger enclosed toilets ❤️👏☕️ [2~Flags OUT] 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧🥾

Bletchley Park - Ascott House

[SITREP 2] well that was pretty brutal; 🥵☀️🔥I won’t be walking later than 13:00 again until this weather ‘does one’ 😂 Fitbit say 8 Miles, I did it in different stages - we’ll see what updates on the system overnight. I saw some of the other Agent updates - think I’ll also be setting off at dawn tomorrow morning! I can report that ‘not much shade was had’, but at least I’m ‘dark skinned & thick skinned’ so soaked it all up anyhow 😂 Had a few horn beeps of encouragement from drivers - which was nice - basically I think they could see I was ‘hanging out of my Ar*e’ on a long hill outside Wing, so they were being supportive😂 Cloudy now - but still roasting here! I made it to Ascott House, but didn’t want to break into my ‘Gold Sovereigns’ to pay the entry fee - as nice as it looked - I’ll need them for Churchills War office later in the week - the picture of the sign was free tho; 😇 I met some Chelsea Pensioners a few years ago on another ABF mission, so dug a pic out for ya’ll - smashing individuals ❤️ I’ve just had a late dinner on Beacon Hill & using ABF Merch where I can. I am sleeping in a big forest tonight near the next location - might be some interesting animal noises💩💩💩 - I’ll update in the morning👍 [I can’t imagine being a Veteran living rough on the street at the moment - I have my car and some spare kit with me, they just have what they can carry - I’m trying to rough it as much as I can this week, washing in toilets etc, it’s very hard, hopefully there will be no-one on the streets soon - Gov have decreed it 👏 Much love to the team, stay safe out there in the field. [2-Flags OUT] 🥵🥾🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 — at Ascott House.

OPB London Mission Briefing - Bletchley Park

[SITREP 1] Agent ‘2-Flags’ Reporting for duty! I took transport yesterday to get me closer to Bletchley HQ ready for my briefing this morning - I’m doing as many of the actual checkpoints as I can this OPB [London] and sleeping rough/in my car as I move along the route; I’m going to try and do 5 - 10 Miles per day this week as I have to cram in my mission this week. Today started by being given a postcard at HQ - it has secret writing on it - so it looks blank! It backs up the info I got from my briefing via electronic courier - I’ll report back later with any route progress. [OUT]🥾🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

Practice Walk #4 - Southsea

A 7 Miler to SouthSea and back, full walking weight. Reached my sponsorship target already 👍🥾

Practice walk #3 - I Walked into the Sea

Practice walk #3: Agent Steve “2-Flags” Smith - a quick update; As the ABF don’t sell flags, I had to make one out of my old FLW Normandy flag from 2022 - a 6 Miler today before it got toooo scorchio! 🥵Ended in the sea - which was nice!🥾🎖️

Practice Walk #2

Practice Walk #2 So today I ‘field tested’ my new ABF teeshirt, VE Day mini flag pole & a new remote selfie-stick, all to help prove my missions next month during OPB London. I’m very lucky to live down here on the South Coast, hotter than the Devils armpit today mind🥵 This week also sees us celebrate a little known anniversary, the formation of small units that supported Bletchley Park, SOE and the War Office in WWII & beyond, so I did a 5 miler today to commemorate all those who went before. [VE80] 🇬🇧❤️🎖️🥾[OUT]

Practice Walk #1

Walked with a pack on for the first time in a few months; Looking to do 20 minute miles during OPB London this year hopefully

VE80 Op Bletchley LONDON
